The short answer: LVT (luxury vinyl tile) is a good fit for most Vero Beach homes: it handles humidity, spills and pet traffic, can be installed over a properly prepared concrete slab, and typically costs less than tile. Its limits are fading in direct sun, no refinishing, and cheap cores that dent. Choose a rigid SPC core and a thick wear layer for pets.
“Is LVT flooring good?” is one of the most common questions we hear from Treasure Coast homeowners replacing flooring, usually followed by “what about the dog?” The honest answer is yes, for the right rooms and the right product. This guide covers the questions that matter in a Florida house. For the full comparison of vinyl plank and tile, see our Florida flooring buying guide.
Is LVT flooring good for a Florida home?
For most rooms, yes. LVT has a vinyl surface that does not absorb water, so it does not swell or warp the way solid hardwood and standard laminate do when humidity swings through the year. That matters on a Florida concrete slab, where moisture is part of the environment. It installs faster than tile, feels warmer and quieter underfoot, and comes in wood-look and stone-look patterns. The tradeoffs are covered below, because they are real.
Is LVT durable enough for dogs and cats?
It can be, and the product you pick decides it. Two specifications matter most for pets:
- The core. A rigid SPC (stone-plastic composite) core resists dents from furniture and claws better than a thin, flexible vinyl core.
- The wear layer. This clear top layer takes the scratching. A thicker wear layer holds up better to claws and heavy traffic, so ask for the wear-layer rating and the manufacturer’s warranty terms instead of choosing on appearance alone.
Because the surface does not absorb liquid, pet accidents wipe up without soaking into the floor, as long as they are cleaned promptly and the seams are tight. Scratch resistance and fade resistance are separate specifications, so check both.
Is LVT slippery when wet?
Not inherently, but it depends on the surface texture. Embossed, wood-grain or stone-texture finishes grip better than a smooth, glossy one. If a room sees wet feet or pet water bowls often, ask for the manufacturer’s slip-resistance information before choosing. For a shower floor, we recommend porcelain tile over any vinyl product.
What are the disadvantages of LVT flooring?
- Sun fading. Prolonged direct sun through large windows or sliders can fade vinyl over time. Window treatments help.
- It cannot be refinished. Unlike real hardwood, a damaged vinyl plank is replaced rather than sanded.
- Cheap cores dent and flex. Thin, flexible products show subfloor imperfections and indent under heavy point loads.
- Subfloor prep matters. The slab needs to be flat and dry enough for the product, so installation cost is not only the plank.
- Tile is stronger in wet areas and heat. Porcelain wins where water stands or where heat is a factor.
What do LVT, LVP, SPC and WPC mean?
LVT and LVP describe the shape: tile or plank. SPC and WPC describe the core: stone-plastic composite is dense and rigid, while wood-plastic composite is a bit softer underfoot. When we recommend a product for a Treasure Coast home, the core and wear layer drive the decision, which is why we default to SPC.
Does LVT work over a concrete slab in Vero Beach?
Yes, when the slab is prepared properly. Most Florida homes sit on a concrete slab, and manufacturers set their own requirements for flatness and moisture. Floating click-lock SPC planks are a common fit for slabs because they do not depend on glue bonding, but the product’s installation instructions always govern. We check the slab during the estimate, and where it needs moisture mitigation or leveling, that is written into the scope before anything is ordered. Underlayment and transitions between rooms are part of the same planning, as covered in our guide to sequencing a multi-room remodel.
What we recommend
For most whole-home flooring projects on the Treasure Coast, we use SPC luxury vinyl through living areas, bedrooms and hallways, with porcelain tile in bathrooms, laundry rooms and any area with a door to the outside. If you have pets, choose the rigid core and the thicker wear layer, and ask about slip resistance for rooms where water ends up on the floor. If a room gets strong direct sun, plan window treatments or talk to us about a different material. See what is included in our flooring installation service, or how flooring fits into a larger whole-home remodel. If the floor runs into the kitchen, our kitchen remodeling team can plan the transition with you.
